Pre-surgery Physio

What is pre-surgery physio?

Pre-surgery physiotherapy – often called prehabilitation or prehab – is rehabilitation completed before an operation.

The aim is to improve strength, mobility and overall fitness before surgery so that recovery afterwards is smoother and faster.

It is commonly recommended before:

  • Hip replacement

  • Knee replacement

  • Spinal surgery

  • Shoulder surgery

Preparing your body in advance can significantly improve post-operative outcomes.

Why is pre-surgery physiotherapy important?

Going into surgery stronger can help you:

  • Recover more quickly

  • Regain mobility sooner

  • Reduce post-operative complications

  • Improve confidence after surgery

  • Shorten overall rehabilitation time

Stronger muscles and better movement patterns support healing.

What does pre-surgery physio involve?

Prehab may include:

  • Targeted strengthening exercises

  • Mobility and flexibility work

  • Balance training

  • Walking practice

  • Education about what to expect after surgery

You will also learn exercises to continue immediately after your procedure.
