Developmental Delay

What is developmental delay?

Developmental delay occurs when a child takes longer than expected to reach physical or movement milestones. Every child develops at their own pace, but some children may experience delays in skills such as sitting, crawling, standing or walking.

These delays can affect balance, coordination and confidence with movement.

Physiotherapy can support children with developmental delay by improving strength, movement skills and physical confidence.

What causes developmental delay?

Developmental delays can occur for a range of reasons.

Common causes may include:

Sometimes there is no clear medical cause, and children simply need extra support to develop movement skills.

What signs might indicate developmental delay?

Parents or carers may notice:

  • Delayed sitting, crawling or walking

  • Frequent falls

  • Poor balance

  • Difficulty climbing stairs

  • Reduced coordination

  • Fatigue during physical play

  • Avoiding running or jumping

  • Struggling to keep up with peers in physical activities

Early support can help children build confidence and develop these skills safely.
