Surgery and hospital rehabilitation

What is post-surgery and hospital rehabilitation?

After surgery or a hospital stay, it is common to experience muscle weakness, stiffness and reduced confidence with movement. Even a short period of bed rest can lead to loss of strength, reduced balance and difficulty with everyday activities.

Post-surgery and hospital rehabilitation focuses on helping people safely rebuild strength, mobility and independence at home.

Physiotherapy plays an important role in supporting recovery, reducing complications and helping people return to normal daily activities.

Why might someone need physiotherapy after surgery or hospitalisation?

Many people benefit from physiotherapy after medical treatment or hospital discharge, particularly following:

Even when the main medical issue has been treated, rehabilitation is often needed to restore movement and independence.

What difficulties can occur after surgery or a hospital stay?

People may experience:

  • Muscle weakness

  • Joint stiffness

  • Difficulty walking

  • Reduced balance

  • Fatigue during activity

  • Difficulty standing from chairs or climbing stairs

  • Reduced confidence moving around the home

These difficulties can increase the risk of falls and slow recovery if not addressed.

How can physio help with recovery?

Physiotherapy supports safe and gradual rehabilitation.

It works by:

  • Improving muscle strength

  • Improving joint movement

  • Practising walking and mobility

  • Improving balance and stability

  • Reducing stiffness and discomfort

  • Supporting independence at home

  • Reducing falls risk

Rehabilitation is always tailored to the person’s condition, surgery and recovery stage.
