Falls Prevention Physio

What is falls prevention physiotherapy?

Falls prevention physiotherapy focuses on reducing the risk of falls by improving strength, balance and confidence with movement.

Falls are one of the most common causes of injury, particularly in older adults or people with reduced mobility. Even when a fall does not cause serious injury, it can lead to fear of falling again and reduced activity.

Physiotherapy helps identify the causes of falls and supports safer, more confident movement.

Why do falls happen?

Falls are usually caused by a combination of factors rather than a single issue.

Common causes include:

Identifying these factors helps reduce the likelihood of future falls.

What problems can falls cause?

Falls can lead to both physical and emotional difficulties, including:

  • Bruising or injury

  • Fractures

  • Reduced mobility

  • Loss of confidence walking

  • Fear of falling

  • Reduced independence

  • Increased risk of future falls

Addressing balance and strength early can significantly reduce these risks.

How can physio help prevent falls?

Physiotherapy focuses on improving safe movement and stability.

It works by:

  • Improving muscle strength

  • Improving balance and coordination

  • Practising safe walking patterns

  • Improving reaction time

  • Reducing stiffness

  • Building confidence with movement

  • Identifying and reducing fall risks

Structured rehabilitation can significantly lower the risk of repeat falls.
