Supporting Women’s Health Through Community Physiotherapy

Group Sessions for Women over 50 in Rotherham (S65)

The Need

At United Multicultural Centre in the S65 postcode area of Rotherham, a growing number of women aged 50+ were facing challenges that extended beyond physical health.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the centre identified increasing levels of:

Many women wanted to stay active and independent – but did not feel comfortable attending gyms or mainstream exercise classes.

This highlighted a clear gap:
accessible, safe, and tailored physical activity within the community

The Approach

Village Physio partnered with the United Multicultural Centre to create a bespoke group physiotherapy programme designed specifically for these women.

The project delivered:

  • weekly 1-hour physiotherapy sessions

  • exercises tailored to women aged 50+

  • a focus on balance, strength, and fall prevention

  • ongoing assessment and adaptation for each individual

Unlike standard fitness classes, sessions were led by a Chartered Physiotherapist with specialist experience in older adults and falls prevention.

Each session included:

  • gentle chair-based exercises

  • progressive mobility and strengthening work

  • education around managing long-term conditions

  • time for questions and individual guidance

Exercises were designed to be simple and repeatable at home – helping participants take control of their own health beyond the sessions.

The Impact

The impact of the sessions was both physical and social.

Participants experienced:

  • improved strength, coordination and flexibility

  • increased confidence in everyday activities

  • better understanding of how to manage their health conditions

  • greater independence at home and in the community

Everyday activities became more manageable – from walking to the shops to playing with grandchildren.

Feedback from participants included:

“Exercises are easy to follow and help keep me mobile.”

“You can do as much or as little as you need – a friendly group and very knowledgeable.”

“The exercises are easy to remember at home. He’s encouraging and makes the class fun.”

Beyond physical improvements, the sessions helped address isolation. Women from different backgrounds came together in a supportive, welcoming environment – creating friendships, sharing experiences, and building confidence.

Why This Approach Worked

This project was effective because it combined clinical expertise with real community need.

Key factors included:

  • physiotherapy-led sessions rather than generic exercise classes

  • tailored support based on individual needs and abilities

  • a familiar, trusted community setting

  • a focus on both physical and social wellbeing

It also helped reduce barriers to care by providing access to professional physiotherapy support within the community.

Long-Term Value

The benefits extended beyond the sessions themselves.

Participants:

  • continued exercises independently at home

  • developed healthier routines

  • felt more confident managing their conditions

  • reduced their risk of falls

Projects like this don’t just improve mobility – they support long-term independence and wellbeing.

Looking Ahead

Following the success of the programme, group sessions are expected to return after the summer – continuing to support women in the local community.

For Community Organisations

If you run a charity, community group or local organisation, physiotherapy-led group sessions can offer a practical and meaningful way to support your members.

They are particularly valuable for:

  • older adults

  • people with long-term health conditions

  • groups experiencing reduced activity or isolation
