Every child develops at their own pace; some walk early, some take a little longer, and some struggle with balance or coordination. It can be difficult to know what is normal variation – and what may benefit from support.

At Village Physio, we provide children’s physiotherapy at home across Rotherham, Sheffield, Doncaster and Barnsley. We often speak with parents who are unsure whether their child’s movement delay warrants concern.
Here’s what to look for.
What Is a Developmental Delay?
A developmental delay occurs when a child does not reach expected milestones within the typical age range.
In physiotherapy, we focus mainly on gross motor development – how children move their bodies. This includes:
• Rolling
• Sitting
• Crawling
• Standing
• Walking
• Running
• Jumping
• Climbing stairs
Some variation is normal. Patterns are what matter.
Signs Your Child May Have a Gross Motor Delay
You may want to seek advice if your child:
• Is not sitting independently by around 9 months
• Is not walking by 18 months
• Frequently trips or falls
• Avoids climbing or running
• Appears weaker than peers
• Has difficulty with stairs
• Tires quickly during physical play
• Shows poor balance
Early support can significantly improve outcomes.
What Causes Developmental Delays?
Developmental delays can have many causes, including:
• Low muscle tone
• Hypermobility
• Muscle weakness
• Premature birth
• Neurological conditions
• Genetic conditions
• Lack of opportunity for movement practice
Sometimes there is no underlying medical condition – just delayed strength or coordination.
How Can Children’s Physiotherapy Help?
Physiotherapy supports children by:
• Improving strength
• Improving balance
• Developing coordination
• Building confidence
• Encouraging safe exploration
• Supporting milestone progression
Exercises are made age appropriate and often play based. Home physiotherapy can be especially effective because children feel more relaxed in familiar surroundings.
What Happens During an Assessment?
At Village Physio, we:
• Observe movement and posture
• Assess strength and balance
• Review developmental milestones
• Identify specific areas of delay
• Create a personalised plan
We also provide guidance to parents on simple activities that can be practised daily.
When Should You Seek Advice?
If you are unsure, it is always reasonable to ask. Early physiotherapy does not label a child – it supports development. Many children make excellent progress with simple, targeted intervention.
